Terms & Conditions for Booking Mandarin Tutors

The following are terms and conditions for booking Chinese/Mandarin tutors via ShanghaiTutors.Com. Please read these terms and conditions carefully before agreeing to them. Do not agree unless you fully understand and accept each condition. If you have any questions or concerns not addressed here, please contact us.

Bookings
ShanghaiTutors.com is a platform that connects individuals seeking tutoring services with independent tutors providing those services. We do not employ or manage tutors; therefore, you are responsible for selecting the right tutor to meet your needs. Bookings are made based on your judgment, and you engage tutors as independent contractors under a direct binding contract. We are not involved in any interactions between students and tutors and will not accept liability for disputes, conflicts, or any accidents, losses, injuries, or damages that occur during or after tutoring.
Meeting
You may schedule an appointment with us to meet the tutor before committing to any lessons. There is no charge for meetings held in a neutral location that we provide in downtown Shanghai. If you prefer the meeting to occur at your location, a fee of 50 RMB will apply if you are within the inner ring of Shanghai, or 100 RMB if you are outside of it.
Tuition Fee
Please review the standard rates posted in tutors' profiles for reference. Discuss tutoring rates and details directly with the tutor during your meeting. The tuition fee is to be paid upfront through ShanghaiTutors based on the total booking hours before the first lesson.
Service Fee
A service fee of 400 RMB is charged for one-on-one private tuition, regardless of how many hours are booked at one time. This fee is charged only once upon successful matching and must be paid upfront along with the tuition fees before tutoring begins. If you are studying in a group, an additional surcharge of 200 RMB will be applied for each extra student in the group. Any textbooks used will be billed separately at their actual price. For large group and corporate bookings, the service fee varies; please consult us for confirmation. The service fee will be charged each time you make a new booking (extending lessons counts as a new booking).
Payment
All payments must be made in cash (RMB), Alipay, WeChat, or by bank transfer (RMB transfers within China only). Please note that credit cards are not accepted. Ensure you have the necessary funds before the start of your first lesson. Tutoring will not commence until the total amount (tuition fee plus service fee) is received in full.
Continuous Support
The service fee guarantees you one year of continuous support from us. If any issues arise during tutoring (e.g., scheduling conflicts, declining teaching quality), we can arrange for a new tutor (tutoring rates must be discussed and confirmed with the new tutor). There is no limit to the number of times you can change tutors within one year.
Tutoring
A minimum of 40 tutoring hours is required for any booking. ShanghaiTutors.com reserves the right to modify these conditions as necessary. The number of individuals (adults and children) participating in lessons cannot exceed the number confirmed in the contract. If this limit is exceeded, the contract will be immediately terminated, and service and tuition fees will be recalculated under a new contract. Substitution of individuals during the contract period is not allowed unless previously agreed upon with us. We will permit the transfer of a learner's booking to another person or party, but a written request must be sent to us for approval. The lesson's location, time, and frequency will be determined through discussion between the learner and the tutor and included in the contract. Any changes to these factors will result in an adjustment to the tuition fee. We and the tutor do not provide a location for lessons; it is the learner's responsibility to secure a suitable venue. Tutors may refuse to conduct tutoring sessions if the location is deemed unhealthy, hazardous, or if it requires mandatory consumption. Learners may not use paid hours for purposes other than Mandarin learning, such as translating, interpreting, writing papers, or tour guiding, unless otherwise agreed upon in writing by us. Learners must not engage in any activities that could be a nuisance or offense to the tutor, or that will invalidate any insurance policies pertaining to the tutoring.
Age Requirement
At least one individual over the age of 18 must supervise all tutoring sessions for young students.
No-Show Policy
Learners must notify the tutor at least 12 hours in advance if they wish to delay or cancel lessons. If a learner does not show up for a scheduled lesson without prior notification, the hours will be counted as completed, and the tutor is not obliged to wait. If you miss a lesson, any fees associated with that lesson will be forfeited. We do not issue refunds for no-shows due to inclement weather, illness, or personal reasons. The rule also applies to any learner in a group lesson.
Refunds
We guarantee a refund of your tuition fees for any unused hours, regardless of the reason-whether you wish to reduce your hours or stop learning permanently, as long as you notify us within the service time (1 year).
Conditions:
1 A 10% processing fee will be deducted from the refunded tuition to cover administrative costs.
2 Requests must be made in writing and sent to moneyback@ShanghaiTutors.Com within the service time (1 year).
3 Refunds will be processed within 20 working days after receiving the request.
4 Refunds are not applicable if the learner has previously breached the contract or engaged in illegal or improper behavior.
5 Resuming lessons with the same tutor without notifying us will invalidate Money Back Guarantee.
6 Accepting a refund will automatically terminate your one-year service agreement, and the one-time service fee is non-refundable under any circumstances.
Student Complaints
If you encounter any issues with tutoring during contracted hours, please notify the tutor immediately. If the tutor is unavailable or the issue cannot be resolved, contact our staff or the Emergency Complaints Number provided in your contract. Complaints made after the completion of lessons cannot be considered.
Tutor Complaints
In the event of complaints from tutors regarding illegal or inappropriate behavior or language, we reserve the right to terminate the contract and cancel lessons without refunding any money paid, once the claims have been verified. You will also be subject to Chinese laws.
Disclaimer
All tutors have the right to refuse to teach you. If this occurs, we will arrange a comparable tutor at the original rate. The learner agrees to hold us harmless in this situation. This disclaimer also applies if the tutor chooses to withdraw from the services of ShanghaiTutors.Com. If no comparable tutors are available, the learner agrees to accept a refund of any unused tuition fees paid.
On rare occasions, if circumstances force us to cancel a booking, the learner can select another tutor with equivalent qualifications from our available listings. If the alternative options do not meet the client’s needs, we will refund the paid tuition fee without incurring any further liability.
Both we and the tutors reserve the right to terminate any individual’s contract due to disruptive behavior, with no refund provided. We also reserve the right to reject any person from using our service for any reason.
